Bermuda vs. tall fescue

Bermudagrass is a warm-season grass with high heat and drought tolerance and high wear tolerance, but low shade and cold tolerance — it goes dormant and turns brown in cooler months. Tall fescue is a cool-season grass with moderate-to-high heat tolerance, moderate drought tolerance, and better shade tolerance, and it's the most common lawn grass planted in California because it stays green through more of the year without going dormant.

In short: choose Bermuda for a sunny, low-maintenance, water-thrifty lawn that can look tan in winter, and tall fescue for a lawn that needs to look green year-round or gets partial shade.

Other warm-season grasses in LA

A few other grasses show up often in Southern California yards:

• St. Augustine: high heat and salinity tolerance and handles shade better than Bermuda, but is less cold-tolerant and less wear-tolerant
• Kikuyu: aggressive, drought-tolerant, and durable underfoot, but spreads fast and needs regular mowing and edging to stay controlled
• Zoysia: dense, wear-tolerant turf that handles moderate shade better than Bermuda, with slower growth that can mean less frequent mowing
• UC Verde buffalo grass: a low-water, low-mow California native cultivar developed by UC for hot, sunny, low-traffic areas

Cool-season options besides fescue

Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass are cool-season grasses sometimes mixed with tall fescue for color and density, but on their own they have low heat and drought tolerance and generally struggle more than tall fescue through a full LA summer without steady watering.

When a no-grass yard makes more sense

Small, shady, or rarely-used lawn areas are often better converted to California native and low-water plants, mulch, or decorative rock — no grass type will thrive in deep shade or tiny strips that get scalped by mowers.
